Third Day was a Christian rock band formed in Marietta, Georgia during the 1990s. The band was founded by lead singer Mac Powell, guitarist Mark Lee and former member Billy Wilkins.

“A guy tweeted me the next day. He said, ‘I live right down from the church about a few blocks away and my yard.’ It was a picture of him standing in his yard waist down in the water.” The musicians are 'still thinking about the people down there.

There wasn’t any place in town that you couldn’t drive to at any time and find a great parking place. Except for the heart of rush hour, you could go anywhere just about any time with ease. It’s only recently started to “grow up” in that regard, but compared to New York or L.A., it’s still so laid back. The studio scene is very much that way too. Now, the sessions for Top 40 country radio type stuff, the major label/hot new artist stuff, can be on the stressful, self-important side. But even though that part of the business sometimes thinks it’s the only part of the business, there’s so much more going on in town.

Mac liptensity collection for fall 2017. Longtime artists Third Day and Steven Curtis Chapman were just in Baton Rouge. How recently? “We were in Baton Rouge the night the storm came in,” Third Day front man Mac Powell said. “Our bus broke down, so we were there all night. Fortunately, we were in a place it wasn’t flooding quite yet and got out of there. I don’t know how you look at it — way, way late at night or way, way early in the morning.” Powell said he tweeted about the show at Greenwell Springs Baptist Church.

FBPO: Tell me about playing in that band, Union Station. BB: It’s been the greatest thing in the world. You talk about “on-the-job training!” I thought I was pretty good when I joined, but it didn’t take me long to see I had a lot to learn. My second gig was the Telluride Bluegrass Festival, in front of 10,000 people. Within the first three months, we went to Finland, Sweden and Japan.

I have not talked about it a lot from stage because I’ve got four other guys on stage that have not adopted, so I don’t want to turn it into a thing about me and my family. But now I have a little bit more of a chance to share some of those things. Also the bass player (Tim Gibson) playing in Steven’s band is our (Third Day’s) bass player we’ve had for a year and a half.

And I’ve been getting a lot more involved in songwriting. I love variety in my work. I love working with different folks in different settings. It keeps things fresh and always puts you around new ideas and new ways of doing things. FBPO: What would you be if you weren’t a bass player? BB: I love to hunt and fish.

The band's name is a reference to the biblical accounts of Jesus' rising from the dead on the third day following his. The band was inducted in the on September 19, 2009. They have sold over 7 million albums in the United States and had 28 number one Christian album chart radio hits.

The success of the album led to a deal with INO Records, which released her third album, Great God Who Saves, in 2008. It was followed in 2011 by Blessings, which topped the Billboard Christian albums chart. INO became Fair Trade Services before releasing God of Every Story in 2013 and the Christmas album God with Us in 2015. The latter saw Story joined by Steven Curtis Chapman, Brandon Heath, and on multiple tracks, a 120-piece choir and 50-piece orchestra. And with the advent of smaller, cheaper home studio rigs, there’s great music being created everywhere, all over town. And it’s not just country music. There’s lots of great indie and Americana. And of course the songwriting scene is just unbelievable. FBPO: Tell me about your DVD release, A Solid Foundation to Acoustic Bass. BB: I got to talking with John Lawless from AcuTab about the possibility of doing an instructional DVD. I’m no music teacher and most of what I do is by ear and by feel, but I’ve always had a lot of folks that liked my playing and people were always asking me about how I do this or that.
