The AdobePS enables you to print documents from Macintosh applications to a PostScript printer. Driver Package.
The Apple knowledge base indicates that AdobePS version 8.5.1 installs a PrintingLib extension that is incompatible with the Apple LaserWriter8 version 8.6 driver. Apple recommends not using the older Adobe driver with OS 8.6. You didn't mention what versions were involved or what changes had been made before this happened. Possibly the OS was upgraded to 8.6 and overwrote the PrintingLib extension with one now incompatible with the AdobePS driver.

An employee at my work has one of those fancy new aluminum iMacs, and we recently had to replace the hard drive in it due to failure. The system is fine now, runs great, etc, but apparently there is one thing missing from before. When she goes to print in InDesign CS4, she used to have an item called 'Acrobat', or something similar, in the list of available PostScript printers. (see attached image) I'm not sure what needs to be done to restore the functionality she had before.
Follow any instructions given by the installer, then quit the installer when the installation is complete. You can connect your printer directly to a computer without going through a network, by using the optional USB 2.0 socket.
